Всяка глътка е малко начало.
Tereré is not only a refreshing drink. For the Guaraní people and for those who have preserved their tradition, it is a bridge to nature. Every sip is a dialogue with the trees that gave their leaves, with the rivers that bring water, with the earth and the sky that together create life. Tereré is a ritual in which one feels the presence of the spirits of nature – both visible and invisible.
Legends tell that the yerba mate tree was a divine gift to the Guaraní. It is the guardian of vital energy.
Each leaf is a little spirit, carrying the light of the sun and the nourishment of the soil.
Drinking tereré means receiving a blessing from the tree itself.
The tree is seen as a living teacher – it teaches perseverance, as it grows slowly but gives strength to generations.
In tereré, water is more than a solvent – it is the movement of life.
The Guaraní believed every river had a guardian spirit. Drawing water required a small act of gratitude.
Cold water not only cools but also opens the senses to the silence of the forest.
Each sip is a connection to the springs and rains that nourish the earth.
Paraguayans often add herbs – mint, boldo, chamomile, rosemary – or fruits like lemon, orange, pineapple. Each addition is understood as a voice of nature:
Mint brings the fresh wind.
Chamomile brings softness and peace.
Lemon is a spark of the sun.
Rosemary is the memory of the forest.
Thus, the cup becomes a small universe, where each element tells its story.
The Guaraní believed that spirits of nature could inhabit the cup of tereré:
Forest spirits bringing protection.
Water spirits granting lightness and purity.
Ancestors’ spirits joining through the community.
When the cup is passed around in a circle, the spirits are believed to move with it, protecting the people.
Today, even in cities, tereré can reconnect us to nature. Through it, we may feel the stillness of rivers, the strength of trees, the freshness of herbs. It is a small ritual of return, reminding us that we are part of a greater whole.
Tereré is a drink, but also a song – a song of trees, waters, and herbs. It is a way to communicate with the spirits of nature and to invite them into daily life. Every cup carries the voices of the forest, the whispers of rivers, and the light of the sun. And when we share that cup, we share the essence of life itself.
